Approachability at Masked Events

TAGS:

Approachable, or just plain freaky? I don’t know. The jury’s still out, leave your comments below, but, I got this mask custom made so that I could be more approachable at in-person trade shows, because if you’re at a trade show, well, you’ve got to stop complete strangers and generate leads and do business development.

So that engagement piece, that interaction is so mission critical, and being approachable plays a big part in doing that. So even though you’re masked up and you’re at a trade show, here are a couple of things you can do to improve your approachability. All right, so the first one is, and you’ve heard this before, is smile with your eyes.

When you do a true duchenne smile, it kind of crinkles your eyes a little bit, activates muscles around your eyes, which makes your eyes twinkle. And so even though people can’t see your whole face, they can actually tell you are smiling. So make sure you do that. The other thing I want to share with you is to be aware of how you sound.

When you talk, when you smile, it sounds different, and people pick up on that just like they do on the phone. You might also want to make sure that you are using warm inviting tones. You might want to add a little bit more modulation and a little bit more volume so people can feel your excitement and they can hear you through a mask on a noisy trade show floor.

So remember, don’t mask your excitement fully express it. Thanks for watching, engage life!
